Climate-friendly raw materials

The raw materials we use in the production of plant-based proteins – primarily peas and fava beans – come from fields in Denmark, the Baltics, and Northern Europe.

Protein isolates, which are an extra pure form of protein, are preferred by the world’s leading food manufacturers due to their high protein content and neutral taste and color. These isolates are typically easy to digest and free from gluten, allergens, milk, and GMOs, and they are vegan as well as more sustainable than many alternatives.

Aarhus Protein is also a leader in the development of plant-based protein made from dehulled fava beans, a product used in fish feed.

Positive CO2 effect

What is special about peas and broad beans is that both crops are more climate-friendly to grow than traditional crops such as wheat, barley, and rapeseed, because legumes bind nitrogen from the air during growth. At the same time, the plants leave fertilizer in the soil for subsequent crops, which reduces the need to add livestock manure, or other forms of fertilizer.

In addition, plant protein, made from northern European raw materials, is increasingly in demand as an alternative to imported soybeans, which for various reasons can be seen as both a direct and indirect burden on the environment.
